What is an authentic choice or task?
The word authentic means having to do with real life, the real world. An authentic choice or task measures more than a student's performance such as simply recalling information for a fill-in-the-blank, or a multiple choice test. It assesses reasoning, thinking, and creativity levels. This can be accomplished with a portfolio of a student's choice of their best work, a rubric to assess a project in Reading/Language, Science, and Social Studies. And it can even be as simple as a math assignment of 15 math problems where the student can circle the 8 problems that he wants the teacher to assess.
Studies have shown that when students are given a choice (ownership) in their learning, their progress soars!
The link below will give further clarification and examples of authentic choices/tasks for today's students in the 21st Century.
